Memory Blankets Great Valley Fire Basketball by Once Upon a Time Creation

More Than Basketball Memory Blankets

As parents, we know that playing sports as kids is so much more than learning how to play the game. It’s learning to win (and lose) with grace, understanding that others are depending on you to do your part, and comprehending that hard work, hustle, and a good attitude are just as important as natural ability.

Great Valley Fire Basketball

Our kids will play on many teams, be a part of various groups, and participate in a host of activities. The magic happens when you find that amazing combination of fabulous kids, dedicated (and let’s face it, fun) parents, and incredible coaches.

When you find that winning combination, you hold on as long as you can. These memory blankets are the culminating gift of that amazing experience for this group of families.

These kids have been playing, traveling, and working together for five years, from 4th grade straight through 8th. When you’re a kid, that is a huge percentage of your life. A positive experience like that leaves an impression that lasts a lifetime and creates bonds that reach far beyond the court.

The moms that coordinated these gifts for the coaches are truly grateful for their dedication, perseverance, and ongoing support they gave to the GV Fire Team and the boys who played.

Memory Blanket from baby clotjes by Once Upon a Time Creation

Precious Petals Memory Blanket

Did you receive a gift when your baby was born with their name monogrammed on it? Maybe it was a burp cloth, a blanket, or bib?  You loved and held on to that precious gift because it was beautiful, functional, and made especially for YOUR baby. What do you do with it once your baby no longer needs it? Save it for a memory blanket!

Before the Memory Blanket by Once Upon a Time Creation

The Precious Petals Memory Blanket we are sharing today is for Delaney, a fun, full-of-life little girl who has her name monogrammed on many, many of her things. This is one of the perks when your Mom, Colleen, is the Founder and CEO of Baby Be Hip, specializing in unique, personalized baby gifts.

As you know, my favorite part about creating your keepsake is hearing the stories behind the clothes you have saved. This blanket was no exception! When I was looking through the bag of goodies Colleen gave me to create Delaney’s blanket, there was one piece in the pile that I was sure was in the bag by mistake. There was a well-loved fleece baby blanket with the name “Julia” monogrammed on it. As none of Colleen’s kids are named Julia, I was a little stumped.

I asked Colleen about it and she just laughed. Apparently, Delaney found that blanket one day while helping her Mom out at Baby Be Hip. She loved the satin edging on it so much, she asked if she could take it home. Since this particular blanket was not intended to be shipped, the Julia blanket went home with Delaney and became one of her favorites.

After looking through this pile of treasured keepsakes, I realized that our traditional blanket was just not going to work for this project. There were many sizes and textures, providing the perfect opportunity for a new design idea. Colleen was all for it and we are so happy with how it turned out.

The light pink petals along the outer edge of the flower came from two fleece blankets with a satin edge. Since Delaney just loves the satin edge, we added the satin pieces to two of the corners of the new blanket. Each of the blanket petals is accented with a beautifully embroidered white petal that came from one of Delaney’s dresses.

The dark pink petals with the white monogrammed “Delaney” are cut from the valance that was hanging in Delaney’s room. It had stripes of pink floral and solid green along the edges. The accent colors are peeking through the smaller petals near the center.

The smallest petals closest to the center were created from several bibs and the back one of Delaney’s t-shirts.  They are a soft jersey knit and compliment the rest of the flower perfectly. You can probably guess where the center came from…Delaney’s 3rd birthday tee!

I loved working on this project for so many reasons. It was fun to envision a new, unique design that would complement Delaney’s favorite things. I love that Delaney will have one blanket that she can take everywhere and treasure for many years to come. Last, but not least, it was great to get to work with Colleen. We have known each other for a long time (think grade school), lost touch for a while, and have recently reconnected through our businesses.

Colleen is one of those people that you can’t help but admire. She is the loving mom of four wonderful kids (one with special needs), runs a growing, thriving business, and helps the community around her. As Colleen shares her experiences with others, she has shown that life is about family, challenges are a blessing, and you can do anything you set your mind to.

Once Upon a Time Creation Remembrance Keepsakes Handkerchief Pillows 3

Remembrance keepsakes in honor of Grace and Grace

Do you have pieces of clothing or some other fabric you saved from your grandmother? Maybe it is her wedding gown, favorite dress, iconic apron, something she crocheted or quilted, handkerchiefs, or even a tablecloth?  Remembrance keepsakes created from these precious things helps connect generations in a special way. When there is something physical in front of you, it can reach into your memory to recreate a feeling or moment that may otherwise be lost.

Just the word “grandmother” brings a warm feeling to our hearts. She is the one you could talk to without judgement, learn stories of a time so different from ours, and make you feel like the most important person in the world.

Are there little things that remind you of your grandmother? Mine always had a box of Chiclets (those little square pieces of gum), her charm bracelet jangled when she moved, and she made these “magic” desserts with pudding and jello in layers and we could never figure out how she did it.

Once Upon a Time Creation Remembrance Keepsakes Heart Ornaments 2

When we lost my grandmother, we created angel ornaments from her pjs and gave them to the family for Christmas. You can read more about that here. Since then, we have been helping others remember their grandmothers by transforming textiles they saved into remembrance keepsakes to share with their family.

Sometimes we even have the rare opportunity to help a family honor two grandmothers. When both grandmothers are named Grace, you know that is something special.

Christy brought us a shirt, pair of pants, and charms, that belonged to her mother, and her grandmother’s handkerchiefs and wedding rings, and asked us to create remembrance keepsakes for her to share with her family. The goal was to have a gift for everyone, siblings and grandchildren.

We began with the handkerchiefs and designed pillows for Christy’s siblings and cousins in remembrance of their grandmother. Christy and I went through the beautiful handkerchiefs together to coordinate the colors and styles so that each pillow would have a different one on either side.

Then we decided to create ornaments for Christy’s mother’s grandchildren, many of whom did not have the opportunity to meet “Grandma Grace”. Hearts for the boys and angels for the girls. Each child was given a charm from the bracelet which was attached to their ornament. Our hope is that each time the ornament is hung on the tree, stories are told and memories are shared.

Sharing stories of generations before us remains an important part of our family history. If we don’t talk about them, they get lost. Sharing the trials and triumphs of past generations with the next generation helps them gain perspective, give them deep roots, and the courage to sprout wings.

What are the little things you remember about your grandmother?

The Best Baby Shower Gift

A new baby is the most special thing in the world. A new life is beginning and it is time to celebrate! You are looking for a great baby shower gift that is both meaningful and useful that will show how much you care. You want to give something fabulous, but what?

Here is a baby shower gift idea that covers all the bases…thoughtful, functional, and beautiful! Since presentation is half the fun, the “wrapping” for this baby gift is the best part.

Baby Shower gift_Once Upon a Time Creation 2

The great thing about this gift is that it can be scaled to meet your needs by not including everything or adding other gifts. This is all about what works for you!

You may think this is a bit backwards, but we are actually going to start with the box. It’s the best part! The “box” you wrap your gift in is your “something meaningful” and will become the keeper of memories. Select a pretty storage box with a lid (either heavy cardboard or fabric covered). You can normally find a cute one at Home Goods or use the link below to shop on Amazon.

So the parents-to-be know that this special box’s purpose is to hold precious memories, here is a poem for you to print out on card stock and glue onto the inside of the lid. For a clean, finished look, you can trim it with ribbon or cut the paper with patterned scissors. Not thrilled about gluing? It can also be hole punched and attached to the top of your gift with ribbon after wrapping.

An empty box, what could it be?
I thought it was a gift for me!
Although this box is not what is seems,
It’s empty now…but oh the dreams.

Your child unborn will soon arrive
And begin her life with wonder and strive.
While striving to walk, heel to toe
The baby shoes they soon outgrow.

Baby teeth so white and new
You must save them Mommy, for they are few.
A lock of hair, a teddy bear
These precious items you cannot spare.

 And while growing, left behind
Are cherished things you’ll want to find.
So here’s an empty box for you
To keep these things a whole life through.

When baby is grown up and gone,
Your memory box will carry on.
The box you saved at last complete.

All the memories, some sad, some sweet
Will stay close to a Mother’s heart
As your little one was, right from the start.

New Mommy will be so grateful to have a special place to save baby treasures.

Now let’s fill the box…

Loveys are always at the top of the list. The Lovey you give will probably be the one thing the new baby cannot leave the house without, helps them sleep, and provides years of comfort and unconditional love. My favorites are the ones that are a small, cozy blanket fabric attached to a cute little animal head and arms. There are so many choices…bears, dogs, bunnies, and you can find them everywhere or have them shipped to your door.

Whichever Lovey you choose, buy TWO! It is inevitable that one will be dropped, forgotten, or left on a plane (not saying I did that or anything). Since the companies discontinue and change the designs almost every season, it is next to impossible to buy an extra after six months. Please save new Mommy a bit of heartache and buy an extra from the beginning.

Books are next. Just a couple to get the collection rolling. Board books are great as they can be used right away, are colorful, fun, and easy to read. If you are not sure what to buy, the classics never go out of style…Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Love You Forever. Or choose an author with a nice set like Sarah Boynton, Eric Carle, or Dr. Seuss.

A stuffed animal or character ice pack is great to throw in. These are packs that can be refrozen, but they are hidden inside a cute little outer casing. An ice pack is something you don’t need until you need it and you would never think to buy one ahead of time. Putting a cute little bear on your head is a lot more comforting than a bag of peas. You can usually find these at your local pharmacy, Babies R Us, or shop online (the link is below). I also like to include a rattle, small toy, or tether.

Teether by My Buddha Babe

If you are looking to go above and beyond and support a local small business, you may like these natural teethers and these gorgeous handmade booties.

Adding a personalized gift to the basket gives it an extra special touch. You can’t go wrong with a hooded towel monogrammed with the baby’s name or a custom keepsake created from baby clothes or t-shirts worn by the parents-to-be.

Now it’s time to put it all together. To make the gift box look fantastic, crumple up some brown craft paper at the bottom and cover it with tissue that matches your box. This will boost everything up a bit so it sits well for display. You can wrap all the gifts, some, or none. It is up to you and any way you decide will look fantastic. Tying the whole thing together with a coordinating ribbon holds the lid onto the box and adds that finishing touch.

Enjoy your baby shower!
