Did you receive a gift when your baby was born with their name monogrammed on it? Maybe it was a burp cloth, a blanket, or bib? You loved and held on to that precious gift because it was beautiful, functional, and made especially for YOUR baby. What do you do with it once your baby no longer needs it? Save it for a memory blanket!
The Precious Petals Memory Blanket we are sharing today is for Delaney, a fun, full-of-life little girl who has her name monogrammed on many, many of her things. This is one of the perks when your Mom, Colleen, is the Founder and CEO of Baby Be Hip, specializing in unique, personalized baby gifts.
As you know, my favorite part about creating your keepsake is hearing the stories behind the clothes you have saved. This blanket was no exception! When I was looking through the bag of goodies Colleen gave me to create Delaney’s blanket, there was one piece in the pile that I was sure was in the bag by mistake. There was a well-loved fleece baby blanket with the name “Julia” monogrammed on it. As none of Colleen’s kids are named Julia, I was a little stumped.
I asked Colleen about it and she just laughed. Apparently, Delaney found that blanket one day while helping her Mom out at Baby Be Hip. She loved the satin edging on it so much, she asked if she could take it home. Since this particular blanket was not intended to be shipped, the Julia blanket went home with Delaney and became one of her favorites.
After looking through this pile of treasured keepsakes, I realized that our traditional blanket was just not going to work for this project. There were many sizes and textures, providing the perfect opportunity for a new design idea. Colleen was all for it and we are so happy with how it turned out.
The light pink petals along the outer edge of the flower came from two fleece blankets with a satin edge. Since Delaney just loves the satin edge, we added the satin pieces to two of the corners of the new blanket. Each of the blanket petals is accented with a beautifully embroidered white petal that came from one of Delaney’s dresses.
The dark pink petals with the white monogrammed “Delaney” are cut from the valance that was hanging in Delaney’s room. It had stripes of pink floral and solid green along the edges. The accent colors are peeking through the smaller petals near the center.
The smallest petals closest to the center were created from several bibs and the back one of Delaney’s t-shirts. They are a soft jersey knit and compliment the rest of the flower perfectly. You can probably guess where the center came from…Delaney’s 3rd birthday tee!
I loved working on this project for so many reasons. It was fun to envision a new, unique design that would complement Delaney’s favorite things. I love that Delaney will have one blanket that she can take everywhere and treasure for many years to come. Last, but not least, it was great to get to work with Colleen. We have known each other for a long time (think grade school), lost touch for a while, and have recently reconnected through our businesses.
Colleen is one of those people that you can’t help but admire. She is the loving mom of four wonderful kids (one with special needs), runs a growing, thriving business, and helps the community around her. As Colleen shares her experiences with others, she has shown that life is about family, challenges are a blessing, and you can do anything you set your mind to.
