How do we show Dad how much we love him? What gift will let Dad know how thankful we are for all he does? Since Father’s Day is quickly approaching, these are the questions being asked in every family.
What are your plans for Father’s Day? Is Dad a big baseball fan and would love to spend the day with the kids at the game? Is Dad a golfer and looking forward to a quick morning round and then mini golf with the family? Will you be cheering Dad on as he finishes the run he’s been training for?
After all these great experiences, the memories remain. Just open Dad’s dresser drawer and you can see what he loves (besides his family, of course). Is it full of Penn State tees? Golf shirts? Concert tees? Race tees?
When Dad wears one of his favorites, do the kids ever ask the story of where it came from? Do they know Dad ran a marathon before they were born? Do they know he’s been to over 30 concerts? Do they realize he was there when the Phillies won the World Series…in 1980? There is so much about our lives that our kids may not even know. So now is the time for Dad to tell his stories, share his experiences, and savor all the moments that brought him to this celebration of being a Dad.
You don’t realize it until it happens, but let’s face it, after becoming a parent, life does a complete 180. Sleeping in on Saturday mornings is replaced with the eagerness of a wide awake toddler or an early morning on the field. Winter afternoons are now spent on the court and you are called Coach. Your running goals may have shifted from running another marathon to sharing your love of running as a Stride buddy in the big race.
What comes along with the memories? New shirts! Whether they are hand painted from your favorite artist or a keepsake from the family reunion, they are part of Dad’s story.
Becoming a Dad is life-changing and awesome and unexpectedly challenging and simply the best thing ever! There are so many roles that Dad plays…the “fun one”, mentor, supporter, teacher, coach, hero, and so much more! Thanks to all the Dads out there who are giving it their all on this wild ride we call parenting.
Hope you all enjoy a fabulous Father’s Day with the ones you love!
